South Korea Calls for Investigation Following World Cup Performance

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is urging an inquiry into the nation’s disappointing World Cup performance and the subsequent resignation of coach Hong Myung-bo.

South Korea did not progress out of Group A, earning only three points across three matches. The team claimed victory against the Czech Republic but suffered defeats to Mexico and South Africa.

President Lee expressed his bewilderment at the team’s showing and questioned the selection of Hong as coach.

“It was not an easy decision for me to take this role, but once I took it, I thought about nothing else except being responsible until the very last moment,” Hong stated.

Hong announced his resignation, which coincided with South Korea’s failure to secure one of the top positions for advancement in group play.

President Lee highlighted the need for review given the taxpayer money spent on World Cup participation. He urged the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to conduct a thorough investigation.

“Significant national taxpayer funds and state support are invested in World Cup participation. I ask that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism investigate the circumstances, analyze causes, and develop measures for improvement,” President Lee stated.

Hong, who played in four World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002), had previously managed South Korea from 2013 to 2014 but resigned following the team’s early exit from the 2014 World Cup.
