The Maine Democratic Party announced plans to hold a nominating convention after Graham Platner decided to withdraw from the U.S. Senate race. Platner’s departure follows an accusation of sexual assault from a former girlfriend. He denied the allegation but faced significant pressure from the party to step aside.
Platner, a first-time candidate, reportedly faced accusations of influencing the selection process for his replacement. The Maine Democratic Party, responsible for naming a substitute, will convene a nominating convention. Various potential candidates have expressed interest in the position.
The Replacement Process
According to Maine law, Platner had to voluntarily withdraw by July 13 to allow other candidates to be considered. The Democratic Party must choose a nominee by July 27 if he withdraws.
The Democratic Party held an emergency meeting attended by over 100 state committee members to plan for a nominating convention. Party leaders noted a surge of enthusiasm among Maine Democrats, energizing volunteers and supporters inspired by Platner’s campaign.
Platner Campaign Issues
Devon Murphy-Anderson, the Party’s executive director, accused Platner’s team of trying to influence the nomination. Platner’s team denied the claim, stating their intentions were to understand the process.
Platner’s campaign conducted a survey querying supporters on their messages to the Party and Platner. Despite thousands of votes for Platner, the campaign believes this should influence the decision.
Potential Candidates
Nirav Shah, former director of Maine’s CDC, is evaluating his candidacy. Troy Jackson, who attempted a gubernatorial run, has launched a Senate exploratory committee.
Other names in speculation include Jordan Wood, Shenna Bellows, Dan Kleban, and Hannah Pingree. Actor Patrick Dempsey explicitly stated his disinterest in the race.
Response from Voters
Supporters express disappointment in Platner’s alleged behavior. Many call for his withdrawal, including Paul Attardo, who described the accusation as sincere. He notes parallels with the hasty replacement of Joe Biden in 2024.
