WNBA Co-Owner Suspended for Comments to Fans

Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton faces a fine and a suspension from attending the team’s next five home games. The WNBA confirmed this action to Fox News Digital following an incident involving Keaton at a recent game. Independent journalist Brandi Kruse reported that Keaton allegedly used profane language towards teenage fans of Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham.

Kruse witnessed the encounter and supported the teenagers, who attended the game to watch Cunningham. The incident gained widespread attention after Cunningham addressed it, expressing disappointment in Keaton’s conduct and praising the fans for their courage.

“I believe there is a safe space and love for everyone. Disagreements should be accompanied by kindness. I admire those girls for standing up for themselves,” Cunningham wrote.

Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder issued an apology on behalf of the organization, emphasizing a commitment to respect and inclusivity at games.

The altercation began when the teenagers, wearing XX-XY Athletics gear, attended the game in support of women’s sports. Reports and footage distributed by Fox News Digital displayed tensions at the game, involving exchanges with other fans as well. Prominent figures, including J.K. Rowling, commented on these events via social media.

Kruse, who accompanied the girls, claimed that Storm players mocked them and that Keaton used offensive language. The girls identified Keaton, who was seated alongside Sue Bird, based on a description from security personnel. Kruse insisted that such behavior would typically result in ejection under the arena’s code of conduct.

Kruse recounted how one of the girls was visibly upset, expressing disappointment that the harassment overshadowed their excitement for attending the game.

Amidst rumors, Kruse clarified that the teenagers voluntarily put down their supportive signs due to feeling uncomfortable after the incident, not due to coercion from others.

Prior to the game, the Storm was aware of planned demonstrations and assured the public of their commitment to a welcoming environment. Following the match, head coach Sonia Raman reiterated this intent, although she did not delve into the specific allegations.

The Indiana Fever distanced themselves from the rally held in support of Cunningham and clarified their lack of involvement with its organization.
