Amazon has reacted to the cease-and-desist letters issued by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to 40 major retailers. These notices demanded the halt of sales of certain motorized scooters and e-bikes. Major online retailers like Wayfair, Walmart, Temu, Target, and Amazon received these letters. The directive required them to immediately stop selling prohibited scooters and e-bikes to New York City residents and businesses. Failure to comply could result in $2,000 fines starting August 18, as stated by Mamdani.
Reason Behind the Cease-and-Desist Letters
The prohibition on these scooters and e-bikes is due to some products surpassing legal speed and wattage limits. Additionally, certain mopeds lack valid Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs). NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani took legal action against online retailers selling high-speed e-bikes, stand-up e-scooters, and other products not allowed on New York City streets.
Notably, the speed limit for e-bikes in New York City is capped at 15 mph, with a maximum allowance ranging between 20 to 25 mph depending on the bike model. Scooters must not exceed 100 pounds in weight or 20 mph in speed.
“Let’s be clear, these are motorcycles being marketed to New Yorkers as bicycles,” stated Mike Flynn, the Department of Transportation Commissioner.
This action followed the tragic incident of 17-year-old Gabriel Nacato, who was fatally struck by an SUV while riding an e-bike in Lower Manhattan. Nacato was commuting from Bensonhurst to meet a career counselor for summer job applications.
Mamdani emphasized, “The vehicle he was riding can reach over 30 miles per hour, a speed unsuitable for our bike lanes.”
Amazon’s Response to the Cease-and-Desist
An Amazon spokesperson informed Nexstar’s WPIX about their commitment to reviewing the products involved. They expressed willingness to collaborate with the mayor and City Council to address the issues raised. “Safety is a top priority, and we require e-bikes sold in our store to meet applicable safety standards and Amazon policies,” the spokesperson assured.
Meanwhile, Target has not yet provided a response to WPIX concerning this issue.
