The tension started when Donovan Walton, a former Mariner now with the Athletics, hit a 392-foot home run against his old team. Walton celebrated by fist-pumping after rounding first base.

Following Walton’s homer, A’s catcher Brian Serven was hit on the shoulder by a 92.3 mph cutter. The umpiring crew convened and decided to issue warnings to both teams. Wilson, bewildered by these developments, stood at the edge of the dugout with arms spread.

Home plate umpire James Hoye immediately warned Wilson personally. Hoye instructed, “Don’t even argue it. Don’t even come out, don’t even come out.” Ignoring the warning, Wilson approached the plate and was ejected before speaking a word.

Issuing warnings to both teams seems overly aggressive. The Mariners are trying to win the game as they trail.”

With Wilson’s dismissal, the Mariners were down by two runs but managed to score in the next half-inning.
