LOS ANGELES — RJ Mitte, known for his role as Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed series “Breaking Bad,” has passed away at the age of 34. Authorities, along with his representatives, confirmed his death. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa declared Mitte deceased around 1:30 p.m. at a residence believed to be his in Brownsville, Texas. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.
Mitte, who had cerebral palsy, infused his real-life experiences into the character he played on “Breaking Bad.” The show, which starred Bryan Cranston, often touched on themes related to physical disabilities and family challenges. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Cranston expressed his sorrow, recalling meeting Mitte at age 14 when he was cast for the role.
“Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything,” Cranston wrote. “He met the demanding shooting schedule with great determination.”
Mitte emphasized that his condition provided him with a unique perspective that enriched his acting. “You develop a different mentality,” Mitte told the Associated Press in 2014, reflecting on how his disability contributed positively to his outlook and career.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte moved to Los Angeles in 2006 to pursue acting, gradually securing guest roles on sitcoms before landing his breakthrough part on “Breaking Bad,” which aired from 2008 to 2013. Cranston noted Mitte’s growth as an actor over the series’ five seasons, praising his dedication and evolution in the role.
Beyond acting, Mitte was a committed advocate. He held positions such as ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and was president of his Mitte Foundation. His advocacy work focused on disability awareness and inclusion.
Following his success on “Breaking Bad,” Mitte explored other projects, including roles in the series “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice.” He also produced several independent films.
In their statement on his passing, Mitte’s representatives highlighted his dedication to challenging stereotypes and promoting representation for people with disabilities. His legacy continues through both his artistic contributions and his advocacy work.
