The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of RAF Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia. This move aims to protect against missile and drone assaults from the Iranian-backed Houthi group.
During a statement made on Tuesday, U.K. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized that the jets will serve in a defensive capacity. The aircraft will not engage in offensive actions against the Houthis. Alongside the jets, the U.K. plans to send military advisers and a RAF A400M transport aircraft. The transport aircraft will aid in the movement of defense equipment within Saudi Arabia.
The deployment follows an increase in hostilities. The Houthis took responsibility for two attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport occurring on October 10 and 11. These incidents resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to 308 others. The Houthis are involved in an ongoing conflict with Yemen’s government, which has support from Riyadh.
This situation is evolving, with additional updates anticipated.
