Governor Polis Commutes Sentence of Election Denier Tina Peters

1 month ago 0

President Trump conveyed a direct message to Colorado Governor Jared Polis during a phone call last fall: Release Tina Peters. Ms. Peters, a former county clerk, was imprisoned for attempting to support false claims about the 2020 election being rigged against Mr. Trump. The president publicly called for her freedom, and he reiterated his stance privately with Mr. Polis.

According to Governor Polis, who is a Democrat, “What the president has told me privately is the same as what he’s expressed publicly — he wants her pardoned. I did let him know I was not going to pardon her.” This interaction highlighted a prolonged and intense dispute over Ms. Peters’s future, which concluded with Mr. Polis commuting her nine-year sentence. She will be eligible for parole on June 1 after serving less than two years.

The decision put Mr. Polis in a challenging position, facing federal funding cuts and pressure from both President Trump and Democratic allies. The latter encouraged him not to yield to the president’s demands.

This development occurs amid ongoing tension surrounding the nation’s election processes. Election officials have reported continued threats, and Mr. Trump has placed election deniers within the federal government. Battles over redistricting congressional maps have also begun between the president and Democrats across the country.
