Authorities have launched new emergency shelters due to the hazardous materials situation in Garden Grove. The Orange County Fire Authority announced on Friday night that Kennedy High in La Palma was now available as a shelter. Ocean View High in Huntington Beach, Savanna High in Anaheim, and Freedom Hall at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley are also serving as evacuation centers.
By Saturday morning, numerous cars had already gathered at Kennedy, where the American Red Cross managed the center set up in the gymnasium. Support came from different groups, including police officers and local school staff, as well as nearby grocery store workers.
Denise Guerrero, age 70, recounted her experience, being evacuated multiple times due to the chemical leak from GKN Aerospace. Living near the plant, she was disrupted several times as her neighborhood faced evacuation and re-evacuation.
“We landed at a spot managed by the American Red Cross, where I once volunteered. But there’s a lack of direct info from the authorities,” Guerrero expressed.
As residents evacuated, they depended on each other for updates and alerts, often sharing information via their phones. Despite not detecting any unusual odor initially, Guerrero realized the extent of the emergency when she heard a helicopter announcing the evacuation order.
Inside the shelter, numerous evacuees, accompanied by their pets, found comfort on cots while staff provided food and basic amenities. Lt. Kory Ferrin from Garden Grove Police confirmed that food and medical supplies were adequately handled by the Red Cross.
Efforts continued to manage the chemical threat at GKN Aerospace, where firefighters stabilized a tank’s temperature at about 90 degrees Celsius—a critical step, yet concerning, as options remained an explosion or a potential rupture releasing toxic chemicals.
Craig Covey of OCFA commented on the ongoing strategy, emphasizing that efforts are focused on preventing catastrophic outcomes by closely monitoring the tank’s temperature.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in response to the unfolding crisis. Governor’s Office of Emergency Services activated to assist local emergency agencies.
All evacuation centers were updated, with locations specified for those in need of shelter. Families, such as Tricia Quach’s, navigated the uncertainty, staying temporarily with friends or at evacuation centers, while officials worked diligently to stabilize the situation.
Amid ongoing evacuation efforts, many residents expressed frustration at the communication gaps from authorities. In response, local officials assured that information updates would continue, aiming to provide clarity as the situation evolved.
