Pope Leo XIV Warns Against AI’s Disruptive Potential

4 weeks ago 0

Pope Leo XIV took a significant step into the conversation around artificial intelligence on May 25, 2026. He addressed concerns through his first encyclical letter, “Magnifica Humanitas.” This document conveys a message aimed at preserving human dignity and autonomy in the evolving landscape of technology.

The letter, a comprehensive 42,300-word text in English, outlines his vision for leaders across various sectors. Corporate executives, politicians, and individuals all bear the responsibility of ensuring AI does not compromise human roles and values.

Leo XIV cautioned that while technology is not inherently opposed to humanity, it should not drive decisions that endanger livelihoods for profit. Among his recommendations:

  • Government oversight: Governments should regulate the private sector’s development of AI technologies.
  • Worker protection: Provide support and training for workers whose jobs may be replaced by AI.
  • Educational reform: Equip students with critical thinking skills to understand and engage with AI.
  • Child safety: Protect young people from AI-generated violent or inappropriate content online.
  • Decision-making integrity: Ensure humans remain accountable for decisions in deploying weapons technology.

Highlighting the need for consistent employment opportunities, Pope Leo warned against societies that, despite technological progress, leave many in forced idleness. Such conditions risk material advancement paired with social regression, threatening the stability and fairness of society.

Leo XIV shared insights shaped by discussions with experts and leaders, specifically mentioning collaboration with Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic. Together, they aim to find pathways that harmonize humanity’s role in the era of AI.
