Debate Over Illinois State Sandwich Heats Up

4 weeks ago 0

On Wednesday in Springfield, state Representative Rick Ryan from Evergreen Park made a bold proposal. He argued that the official state sandwich of Illinois should not be the horseshoe, a dish laden with ham, cheese, and fries. Instead, he championed the Italian beef as a worthier choice, citing its flavorful and complex nature when properly prepared.

To support his argument, Ryan enlisted Corey Hendrix, an actor from the FX series “The Bear.” The show spotlights the Italian beef much like the Wiener’s Circle does for the char-dog. The debate resembles many others in the state, pitting Chicagoland against downstate enthusiasts.

Although the horseshoe can be found in a few Chicago eateries, including TriBecca’s Sandwich Shop and 6 Degrees (which is now closed), it remains scarce in the area. In contrast, the Italian beef is ubiquitous across Chicago. Johnnie’s Beef in Forest Park is a standout for its dipped delicacies, while Al’s #1 and Luke’s offer their own unique takes just a short walk from city offices. Mr. Beef, now a renowned name, is even available at Midway International Airport and offers authentic flavors at its main location on Orleans Street.

Ryan’s bill met a compromise, allowing the horseshoe to retain a title as Illinois’ official open-faced sandwich. But to many, it aligns more closely with a Danish smørrebrød or a French tartine than a traditional sandwich, falling short of the Italian beef’s appeal.

For Memorial Day, some noted Italian beef establishments might be closed, but many Chicago-style food stands will remain open. They offer a variety of options like gyros, brats, Jibaritos, and more, perfect for a holiday feast.
