President Donald Trump faced criticism for posting a meme featuring an AI-generated mugshot of former President Barack Obama. Shared on Trump’s social media platform, the image presents Obama holding an arrest placard with the name “Barack Hussein Obama” as part of a grid styled like the Brady Bunch. The grid includes seven other figures, like former FBI Director James Comey, centered around a title card labeled “The Shady Bunch.” Trump captioned the post: “This is a bad (Sick!) group of people. Very destructive to our great Nation. Caused tremendous damage through Weaponization! President DJT.” The post gathered approximately 25,000 likes and more than 8,000 shares on the platform, yet received mixed reactions elsewhere.
Why It Matters
Trump has frequently endorsed or amplified the idea of Obama being arrested on social media. Earlier this month, he circulated a post repeating unsubstantiated Democrat election interference claims, ending with: “Arrest them all…But first Barack Obama.” Other AI-generated content shared by Trump includes a video from last year depicting Obama being arrested in the Oval Office and shown inside a jail cell. Many of these posts align with Trump’s allegations regarding “Obamagate,” the claims that officials from Obama’s era improperly investigated or spied on Trump’s 2016 campaign to undermine his presidency. Despite Trump’s description of it as the “biggest political crime in American history,” investigations found no evidence that Obama ordered illegal surveillance or directed the probe.
Critics express concern that, by sharing such posts, Trump risks spreading misinformation and blurring the line between reality and fiction through fabricated scenes of a former president’s arrest. Given that a 2025 Emerson College poll found 47% of Americans trust information from the Trump administration, and 46% trust information from social media, these concerns carry significant weight. However, Trump’s supporters view the posts as political satire aimed at reinforcing Trump’s longstanding claims regarding the Obama administration’s alleged wrongdoing.
Trump’s AI Controversy
Use of AI-created content by Trump has stirred past controversies. In February, he encountered backlash after sharing a manipulated AI-style video depicted Obama using imagery widely condemned as racist, showing Obama as a monkey. The post faced severe criticism from across the political spectrum, with accusations of amplifying offensive stereotypes associated with dehumanizing imagery of a long and harmful history. Again in April, condemnation arose when Trump shared an AI-generated image on Truth Social portraying him akin to a Jesus-like figure, seemingly healing a sick man. The post faced criticism from religious figures and politicians of faith. Though later deleted, Trump asserted the image intended to show him as a doctor. These incidents compounded concerns around Trump’s persistent use and endorsement of AI-generated and altered media.
What To Know
The decision to post the Obama mugshot in “The Shady Bunch” drew strong criticism from many Trump detractors. Melanie D’Arrigo, a Democrat and Executive Director for the Campaign for New York Health, responded on social platform X, stating: “Trump has an actual official mugshot and convictions—none of these people do.” Another user, @JRa1amrez, chimed in, sharing Trump’s notorious mugshot and noting: “Funny how he posted these AI generated [images] when there is a real one of himself.” Jennifer Erin Valent, an author critical of Trump, commented on X: “He has debased our nation on every level. If we don’t learn from this how destructive it is to play frivolous games with our country, we will eventually have no country left.” Jim Stewartson, a podcaster and author vocal against Trump, noted: “Look, Donald Trump spends hours every day brainwashing himself on his website which is an alternate reality largely created by QAnon. He’s genuinely a member of his own cult. His mind does not distinguish between the Qniverse and the objective world.”
Rosalind Garcia, possessing over 26,000 followers and engaged in the recent “No Kings” protest march, was similarly critical, stating on X: “He is such an insecure baby boy. Is incredible. Also, this is more proof of vindictive prosecution.” Newsweek has reached out to the White House for comment.
