Happy, an Asian elephant, has resided at the Bronx Zoo for over 40 years. She is currently 47 years old and has been living alone since 2006 due to a conflict with the zoo’s other elephants. This situation raises the question: Is Happy truly content? Opinions differ significantly.
The Bronx Zoo asserts that Happy is content with her living conditions. However, an animal rights group argues that Happy is essentially imprisoned unlawfully. This group is actively pursuing legal action to obtain Happy’s freedom.
The Nonhuman Rights Project is a nonprofit organization advocating for the legal rights of nonhuman animals. It has taken action to procure human-like legal protections for Happy and other elephants and chimpanzees, filing a petition on Happy’s behalf to secure her release.
The organization claims that keeping Happy in captivity unlawfully restricts her freedom. Their aim is to transfer Happy to an elephant sanctuary so she can interact with other elephants.
Jim Breheny, the Bronx Zoo’s director, dismissed the group’s claims, labeling them as “ludicrous”. He accused the organization of using the zoo’s elephants to promote its own agenda.
The zoo has consistently stated that Happy is not lonely. In a 2016 statement, Director Breheny highlighted Happy’s “tactile and auditory” interactions with other elephants at the zoo.
Happy’s isolation has concerned animal rights advocates for years. Up until 2002, Happy shared her space with Grumpy, another elephant. Grumpy was later injured in an enclosure conflict with two other elephants, Maxine and Patty, and subsequently died.
Following Grumpy’s death, Happy was paired with another elephant, Sammy, who died in 2006. Shortly after, the Bronx Zoo declared it would no longer add new elephants, leaving Happy without a companion.
The Nonhuman Rights Project has previously engaged in legal efforts for other animals, including elephants in Connecticut and chimpanzees. However, they have yet to achieve court victory in any of these cases.
