When a drone crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, it served as a stark reminder of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict’s proximity and danger. This event unfolded in Galati, one of the largest cities in eastern Romania, emphasizing the risks faced by those living near unstable regions.
For residents like Andra Lupsa, 38, frequent phone alerts warning of ‘falling objects from the surrounding airspace’ had become almost routine. Many, like Ms. Lupsa, chose to silence their phones before sleeping. However, on one Thursday night, her husband’s phone remained active. Shortly after 1 a.m., it sounded the alarm.
‘I thought it was just another alert and put my head back on the pillow,’ Ms. Lupsa recounted. Moments later, she was jolted awake by the sound of a loud bang when a Russian drone collided with a nearby apartment structure.
The impact shattered windows and necessitated the evacuation of the building. Residents, along with the Romanian government and NATO officials, found themselves forced to reconsider the routine alerts as actual warnings of severe threats.
As NATO members, Romanian officials now face questions about security and preventive measures in response to incidents like these, illustrating the fragile nature of peace in border regions.
