Albanians Protest Against Government Corruption

2 days ago 0

On June 20, 2026, thousands of protesters gathered in Tirana, Albania, demanding significant government change. These demonstrations have evolved from opposing a luxury resort project into broader calls for government accountability.

The government of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama faces mounting pressure as citizens demand his resignation, along with that of opposition leader Sali Berisha. Accusations of three decades of corruption since the end of the communist regime in 1991 fuel these protests.

The protests initially ignited over a multi-billion-dollar luxury resort plan involving Jared Kushner and his business partners. This development, by investment firm Affinity Partners, aims to add around 10,000 hotel rooms and villas to Albanian coastal lands. One site is Sazan Island, previously a Soviet military base, and the other is Zvërnec, home to protected wildlife.

Former Albanian ambassador Agim Nesho stated to Fox News Digital that the protests are not against foreign investors such as Jared Kushner. He emphasized that these investments could create jobs and opportunities for Albanian youth.

“They are building on private land whose protected status was revoked years ago by Rama and his associates,” Nesho said. “Global investors show accountability and may care more for the environment than Edi Rama and local business interests.”

Eric Czuleger from The Under Report noted that Prime Minister Rama’s government faces unprecedented pressure. Initially, Rama downplayed the protests, suggesting they involved only a few disgruntled individuals. As the protests grew, international media coverage forced a shift in domestic reporting.

Despite ongoing protests, the Rama government continues to support the project. It sent a detailed response to Fox News Digital, dismissing misinformation about the development’s impact. Rama insisted projects undergo comprehensive environmental assessments.

The European Parliament recently called upon the Albanian government to halt construction on protected lands, urging a moratorium on further development in these areas.

A source close to the luxury resort project stated that some online information about the project is manipulated, with disinformation even originating from outside Albania.

Asher Abehsera from Sazan Real Estate Development LLC expressed the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship and economic opportunity.

Despite the ongoing protests, Albanians remain uncertain about potential changes. Czuleger highlighted concerns over continued corruption or the emergence of worse governance if leadership shifts.

Albanian actor Florjan Binaj labeled the protests as the largest since 1991. He continues to participate, advocating for Rama’s resignation and the emergence of an alternative government.

Agim Nesho stated that Albania’s ongoing corruption makes it hard for protesters to compromise or negotiate with the current government. The main demand remains the resignation of the government and the call for early elections under international monitoring.
