Bastille Day Parade: A Symbol of Unity and Support for Ukraine

Ukrainian fighter pilots and troops took center stage during France’s Bastille Day celebrations, showcasing solidarity with Ukraine and highlighting Europe’s military strength. President Emmanuel Macron, in his final Bastille Day as president, hosted around 30 world leaders in an event demonstrating Europe’s unity and readiness to defend itself.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received applause from the European leaders on arrival. The crowd along the Champs-Elysees avenue gave the biggest cheers to Ukraine’s troops. Zelenskyy and Macron exchanged several hugs at the parade’s conclusion.

The holiday coincided with severe forest fires and a heatwave causing the cancellation of traditional fireworks and celebrations. Despite these challenges, the event continued to emphasize France’s national identity and historical accomplishments.

“On July 14, Parisians stormed the Bastille fortress and prison in 1789, igniting the French Revolution,” Macron reminded the attendees.

The parade beneath the Arc de Triomphe featured a French tricolor flag, military bands, and air force planes trailing colored smoke, with Macron in an open vehicle beginning the festivities.

Ukraine’s Prominent Role

Zelenskyy joined Macron and other leaders in the viewing area. Ukrainian troops marched alongside European counterparts, showcasing strength and partnership. Ukrainian co-pilots trained in France boarded Mirage 2000B fighter jets with French pilots.

Lance Cpl. Patrick Risso, a 21-year-old U.K. soldier, expressed pride in marching with Ukrainian forces, affirming stronger ties with NATO and shared history.

International Participation

The parade opened with 500 troops from the “coalition of the willing,” nations pledged to support Ukraine’s postwar security. Foreign troops in combat gear and national flags marched, breaking tradition that usually saw only one foreign country participate. For the first time in 20 years, British troops joined, and Ukrainian forces received the loudest applause.

Aircraft from Germany, the UK, Croatia, Poland, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Spain, and Italy participated in the air display. A record number of 7,600 troops marched this year compared to 5,810 in 2025. Troops took selfies as helicopters flew above the Champs-Elysees.

Impact of the Heat

Forest fires raged in the Fontainebleau forest and southern France, causing some regions, including Paris, to ban traditional fireworks and firefighters’ balls. However, the Eiffel Tower’s fireworks and drone show continued as planned, marking a resilient spirit despite natural challenges.
