Brandon Aiyuk’s Trade Hopes and Frustration with the 49ers

Brandon Aiyuk, wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, appeared to make an attempt to secure a trade to the Washington Commanders during the offseason. However, recent social media activity suggests those plans may have stalled. Aiyuk recently shared a video targeting Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, referring to him by his jersey number, ‘5’.

Aiyuk expressed his frustration in the video, saying, “‘5’ gonna text me talking about some, ‘You’re on my team now. You follow my rules.’ Boy, I’m a grown man, boy. You gonna have to start running behind your momma and I might believe what you talking about. But until then, no.” He further tagged Daniels in a separate post, saying, “Tf always so funny lil n—a. Turn your savage up.” Despite these tensions, Aiyuk seemed to entertain the idea of joining Daniels on the Commanders, saying, “Let’s run it 5! Let’s see! Need you available all season, and I’ll do the same.”

The 49ers have made it known they are seeking a trade partner for Aiyuk, who signed a four-year contract with them valued at $120 million in August 2024. General Manager John Lynch has indicated that a trade might not materialize, and Aiyuk’s public grievances may not be enhancing his prospects. Aiyuk has expressed interest in reuniting with Daniels, his former teammate from Arizona State.

Earlier this month, Aiyuk aired his dissatisfaction with the 49ers, including calling the team “dumb” and “stupid” for extending his contract. He claimed the 49ers are apprehensive about releasing him due to potential success elsewhere in the league. The disagreement began when the 49ers voided the remaining guaranteed money of his contract after his refusal to participate in rehab sessions for a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus he suffered in 2024.

In December, the 49ers placed him on the reserve/left team list after he ceased attending the team facility. Before his injury in 2024, Aiyuk had recorded 24 catches for 374 yards. In 2023, he delivered a standout performance with 1,342 yards from 75 receptions, scoring seven touchdowns, and aiding the 49ers’ journey to the Super Bowl.
