WNBA player Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle Griner are ending their marriage after eight years. Brittney Griner has filed for divorce in Fulton County, Georgia, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The couple, together since 2018, shares a 2-year-old son. Court documents indicate the separation date as July 24, with Brittney Griner describing the marriage as “irretrievably broken.”
In February 2022, Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia for possessing vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She faced charges of smuggling narcotic drugs into Russia and received a sentence of nine years in a Russian penal colony. Throughout her detention, Cherelle, who is an attorney, advocated for Brittney’s release.
In December 2022, the WNBA star was freed through a U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange.
