Canadian PM Warns Against Alberta’s Independence Vote

4 weeks ago 0

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has cautioned against Alberta’s potential move towards independence, likening it to the Brexit vote. Alberta’s Premier, Danielle Smith, recently announced a vote scheduled for October 19 on whether Alberta should remain part of Canada or take constitutional steps toward a binding referendum on leaving.

Carney, drawing from his experience as the governor of the Bank of England during Britain’s 2016 decision to leave the European Union, commented on the complexity of such decisions. “I saw firsthand what happened in the United Kingdom when the view was, ‘Vote for this, it’ll be soft and then we’ll negotiate, etc.,'” Carney remarked. “They’re still 10 years later trying to undo what people didn’t think they were voting for, but what they ended up having.”

He also noted that Smith’s party had not campaigned on a referendum in Alberta’s last provincial election. Carney expressed concerns about the potential vote impacting investments in Canada, suggesting it was undemocratic since it wasn’t a part of the previous election’s agenda. “Is it the democratic will of Albertans? Did they vote for this in the last provincial election? No, they didn’t. It wasn’t on the ballot paper,” he said.

Despite her recent statements, Smith has advocated for Alberta to stay in Canada. Her position has been compared to former British Prime Minister David Cameron’s ahead of the Brexit vote, which he initially supported to manage internal party dynamics while not wanting the UK to leave the EU.

Carney is actively working on initiatives to enhance Alberta’s economic ties to international markets, including an oil pipeline project to the Pacific coast. He emphasized the importance of a united Canada, stating, “We have to be very careful about this. There’s a very strong positive case for Canada, a strong Alberta in a united Canada. I look forward to making that case with many, many other Albertans and Canadians over the course of the next 150 days.”

In response, Smith maintained that the decision regarding Alberta’s future belongs solely to its residents. She argued that frustrations have been exacerbated by previous federal policies. “Albertans’ frustrations have been fueled by the last 10 years of disastrous policies from Ottawa under … Justin Trudeau,” she stated. Smith urged all Canadians to address Alberta’s concerns and work towards unity and progress.
