A man accused of reckless driving led police on a chaotic pursuit in San Diego, which ended dramatically on a bustling beach. Stunned beachgoers witnessed officers apprehend the suspect on Sunday morning.
The incident started shortly before 7:30 a.m. Multiple calls alerted the San Diego Police Department to a man driving erratically in the Pacific Beach area. Witnesses reported the driver of a tan or gold Nissan Frontier performing dangerous maneuvers, such as doing donuts in parking lots and nearly colliding with other vehicles. The vehicle may have also hit curbs and a retaining wall.
Officers quickly reached the scene and spotted the suspect heading toward the ocean. An officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, prompting a high-speed chase.
Initially, police ceased pursuit due to what they described as the suspect’s growing disregard for public safety. Despite the temporary halt, authorities remained vigilant. The truck, now wanted for felony evading, was spotted again. The driver ignored commands to stop, initiating another brief pursuit.
To enhance efforts, police deployed their Airborne Law Enforcement (ABLE) unit. The helicopter tracked the Nissan as it drove onto the beach toward the ocean.
Onlookers at the beach recorded the unusual scene as officers surrounded the vehicle. The suspect, Griffin Charles Foy, aged 25, was seen with his hands raised, compliant as officers moved in to arrest him. A police K-9 unit was present but was not used during the arrest.
Following his apprehension, Foy was charged with felony evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, obstructing or resisting a peace officer, and driving under the influence of drugs.
Remarkably, the pursuit ended without injury. The San Diego Central Jail booked Foy on multiple charges, and investigations are ongoing.
