Montez Sweat Suspended for Violation

The Chicago Bears are dealing with a significant challenge as veteran defensive end Montez Sweat has been suspended for two games without pay. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Sweat violated the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. He will be eligible for reinstatement on Friday, Oct. 23, after the Bears face the New England Patriots in Week 7.

Impact on Bears’ Defense

Sweat’s suspension comes at a critical time, following a 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Despite winning two previous games against the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, Chicago’s defense now faces questions. The Bears must adjust without one of their key defensive players.

Sweat joined the Bears from the Washington Commanders in 2023 and quickly became an integral part of the team’s defense. Originally drafted by Washington in 2019, he was acquired by Chicago in exchange for a second-round draft pick. The Bears then signed him to a four-year, $98 million extension, highlighting his value to the franchise.

Last season, Sweat recorded 5.5 sacks, followed by 10 sacks in 2025, proving his ability as a pass-rusher. This season, he has two sacks so far. His experience and ability to pressure quarterbacks are crucial for Chicago’s defense.

Challenges Ahead

Bears’ head coach Ben Johnson faces the task of maintaining defensive pressure without Sweat. Other defensive linemen will need to step up. With a 3-2 record, Chicago must ensure consistency as they prepare for tough games ahead. Despite impressive defensive performances against Philly and the Jets, Sunday’s loss to Green Bay exposed vulnerabilities.

The defense’s capability to contain high-caliber players is now under scrutiny. The absence of Sweat increases these concerns, adding to the uncertainty about the defense’s return to full strength.

Getting Back on Track

As Sweat awaits reinstatement, Chicago needs to focus on its upcoming games without him. Schefter’s report did not specify which substance was involved in the violation. Chicago will rely on its defense to remain competitive in the NFC North and overcome the challenge.

The Bears still have significant games to play, but their defense must respond effectively during Sweat’s suspension to continue their progress.
