Iván Cepeda, a progressive candidate, acknowledged his defeat in Colombia’s presidential election to Abelardo de la Espriella on Wednesday. De la Espriella, a conservative and a newcomer to politics, gained the support of U.S. President Donald Trump. According to the election results, de la Espriella, a businessman and lawyer, surpassed Cepeda, a current lawmaker, by a margin of 1 percentage point, amounting to nearly 251,000 votes.
In a national address, Cepeda stated, “We assume with serenity, responsibility, and absolute resolve — and let there be no doubt about it — the role that circumstances demand of us. We will exercise a democratic, vigilant, and constructive opposition.”

The election results reflect on the outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s administration. Cepeda promised to extend Petro’s policies, which faced criticism, notably the effort to establish discussions with various armed groups through the “total peace” plan.
Electoral authorities released nearly complete vote counts just hours after the polls closed on Sunday. Petro and Cepeda disputed these initial results. Cepeda indicated his intention to await a recount before acknowledging the outcome.
