Democratic congressional candidate Cait Conley, a 16-year Army combat veteran, is challenging Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District. On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Conley expressed her support for impeaching War Secretary Pete Hegseth, blaming him for compromising U.S. national security.
When asked by anchor Dana Bash if she would vote to remove Hegseth from office, Conley responded affirmatively. She labeled Hegseth a “hazard to American national security” and accused him of failing the service members.
“I believe he has been a hazard to American national security and a disgrace to the office,” Conley stated. “I would absolutely support removing him from office because his actions and decisions are failing service members who have sworn an oath to this country and deserve respect.”
Cait Conley’s statements came after House Democrats filed six impeachment articles against Hegseth, accusing him of improper conduct in managing the Iran war and other military operations. Questions also arose regarding his use of Signal for military discussions.
Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson dismissed these impeachment efforts, emphasizing Hegseth’s focus on achieving presidential objectives. Wilson stated that this is another attempt to shift focus away from the Department of War’s achievements. Hegseth has consistently rejected criticism aimed at his leadership.
Even some Republicans have called for leadership changes. Outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis urged President Donald Trump to appoint a new Pentagon leader, citing concerns over Hegseth’s handling of military talent. The White House, however, maintained strong support for Hegseth.
Mike Lawler’s campaign criticized Conley’s impeachment stance, suggesting she aligns with the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. They claimed her support for impeachment is an example of extremism within the party.
Despite tensions over leadership, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll praised Hegseth upon his departure, noting the Army’s progress under his leadership.
Fox News Digital reached out to Hegseth’s office, the White House, and Conley, but did not receive immediate comment.
