President Donald Trump once again publicly criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for allegedly repeatedly asking for a photo with him at the G7 Summit in France. Trump, in his Truth Social post, accused Meloni of not supporting the U.S. during the recent conflict in Iran.
Alleged Photo Request Controversy
On Saturday, Trump reiterated claims that during the G-7 meeting, Meloni sought a picture with him several times. In response, Meloni told Reuters the accusation was fabricated and expressed her astonishment at such behaviors from a U.S. president towards an ally.
Trump’s Criticism of Meloni’s Support
Continuing his social media criticism, Trump accused Meloni of not backing U.S. military efforts in Iran. He expressed frustration over Italy’s refusal to allow U.S. forces to use an air base in Sicily, viewing it as a significant logistical hurdle.
In March, The Guardian reported Italy’s decision to block U.S. military access due to carrying weapons for the war against Iran. Trump lamented this lack of cooperation despite the U.S’s financial contributions to NATO allies.
Meloni’s Response to Trump
Meloni responded on Instagram, criticizing Trump’s ongoing attacks and highlighting her duty to protect Italy’s national interest. She emphasized that the use of military bases is governed by longstanding agreements, which she has respected.
Meloni also rebuffed Trump’s concern over her popularity, asserting that her focus remains on Italy’s sovereignty.
Past Relations and Policy Disagreements
The relationship between Trump and Meloni once seemed strong, with Meloni being the only EU leader invited to Trump’s 2025 inauguration. However, tensions rose when Trump imposed global tariffs, which impacted Italy despite Meloni’s efforts for trade relief.
Meloni also publicly opposed Trump’s comments on Pope Leo’s stance regarding Iran.
Italy’s Stance on Iran
Meloni has maintained a strong position against Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. She advocates for diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s ambitions and reassured Italy’s non-participation in military actions, as she told the Senate in March.
Alongside these, the recent talks between the U.S. and Iran were postponed due to clashes involving Israel and Hezbollah. The ceasefire led to the rescheduling of discussions aimed at halting hostilities for 60 days.
