Heat Dome Over Europe Maintains High Temperatures

Heat Wave Hits Europe Again

Western and central Europe are facing another round of extreme heat this year with near-record temperatures expected in June. This prolonged heat wave is caused by a strong high-pressure system “heat dome” over continental Europe.

Understanding Heat Domes

A heat dome is a large area of high pressure in the atmosphere that traps heat in a region for extended periods. Such phenomena occur globally.

“The high-pressure system behaves like a lid on a pot, restricting rising air, which prevents cloud formation. Consequently, less cloud cover increases sunshine, warming the ground continuously.”

This description from the Royal Meteorological Society in Reading, England, highlights the mechanics of a heat dome.

Impact on Weather Patterns

France’s weather agency, Météo-France, explains that these high-pressure systems also block or shift weather fronts, resulting in fewer clouds and little rainfall.

The result is sustained sunny, dry conditions, exacerbating the heat wave’s effects.

Images of locals, like a woman in Spain using an umbrella for sun protection, underscore the challenges faced by those enduring the nation’s first official heat wave.
