Family Seeks Answers in 18-Year-Old’s Mysterious Death

The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, who was found dead after a boat trip on July 4 to an island off the Gulf Coast, has hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The investigation into his disappearance continues.

“We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light,” said Crump.

Wells’ body was discovered off Horn Island, Mississippi. He was last seen with friends on Saturday afternoon. According to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter, Wells traveled by boat with friends but did not return with them. His mother reported him missing that night.

A rescue team found his body the next morning. His family states that an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

Ledbetter mentioned that Wells’ friends are cooperating with the investigation. “It sounds like he chose to stay on the island with the assumption that he was going to ride back to the mainland with someone else,” said Ledbetter to The Associated Press.

Wells, who attended Southwest Mississippi Community College and played as a wide receiver for their football team, would have turned 19 in the coming month. His mother, Christine Wonsley, expressed her grief in a social media post, stating the family is looking for videos and documentation from the island.

“My heart is broken for our sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others,” said Wonsley. “Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son.”
