A devastating fire has engulfed Adolf Hitler’s mountain retreat, known as the ‘Eagle’s Nest,’ with the main building reported to be beyond saving. German police in Bavaria confirmed the arrest of a suspect as investigations continue.
Approximately 200 emergency responders were dispatched to the location, officially named Kehlsteinhaus, at around 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday (3:15 p.m. ET). The remote Alpine site showed visible flames as fire crews neared the retreat, necessitating the use of breathing equipment for emergency services. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
The fire remained active into the early hours of Saturday, with the secluded location above Berchtesgaden town complicating efforts to completely extinguish the blaze. A police spokesperson informed Germany’s Bild newspaper that the property suffered extensive damage and is unlikely to be salvaged.
Authorities are looking into whether arson sparked the fire. A motorcyclist was detained near the scene, as reported by the newspaper. Additionally, police confirmed that a ‘suspicious person’ has been taken into custody, with prosecutors in Traunstein handling the criminal investigation regarding the fire’s cause.
No details about the suspect’s identity or motives have been disclosed yet.
This is a developing situation; further updates are expected.
