In Alengmora village, Jorhat, India, a schoolgirl and her father navigate through floodwaters. The situation in India’s northeastern Assam state remains critical. The death toll has reached 100 after two more fatalities overnight, as reported by officials.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority indicated that several rivers are still above danger levels, posing a threat of new flooding in susceptible regions. Prolonged heavy monsoon rains have caused rivers, including the Brahmaputra, to overflow. This has inundated communities, disrupted livelihoods, and damaged infrastructure.
The Brahmaputra river courses roughly 900 kilometers (560 miles) through Assam. Recently, it flooded villages, swept away homes, and forced about 300,000 people into government-run relief shelters. Since the floods began last month, more than 700,000 people have been displaced, with large parts of farmland submerged and roads and infrastructure damaged.
While some residents have started returning home as the waters recede, around 49,000 people still reside in 125 relief camps and distribution centers. Relief and monitoring efforts continue, with authorities assessing damage and identifying needs.
Livestock suffered heavily, devastating rural communities and raising concerns about potential disease outbreaks. Families returning to their homes find them buried under thick silt, complicating recovery. Farukuddin Ahmed, a trader from Nazira town in the Sivasagar district, explained that many homes stand buried under layers of silt.
“Only a few houses remain; the rest were washed away,” Ahmed stated. “Dairy farmers have lost all cattle, and must start anew.”
Assistance in the form of building materials like roofing sheets is arriving, Ahmed noted. Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Pijush Hazarika stated that officials are finalizing damage assessments to provide financial rehabilitation support. Interim compensation has been distributed to approximately 50,000 affected residents.
Annual monsoon floods are common in Assam, inundating large areas and displacing thousands. Experts attribute increasing intensity to human-induced climate change. Historically, monsoon rains occurred predictably from June to September and October to December. Now, they arrive erratically, with intense bursts followed by dry periods.
