A 20-year-old hiker lost his life in a tragic accident at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon. The incident occurred when he fell from a 177-foot waterfall. Park officials labeled the event as a “horrific accident”. The hiker, visiting from out of state, reportedly ventured off-trail to reach a photo spot, crossing a barrier above the falls.
The accident happened at the upper viewpoint of South Falls, the park’s tallest waterfall. This waterfall drops into a large pool below, according to the Oregon State Police.
“It was a pretty horrific accident,” stated Silver Falls State Park regional manager Chris Gilliand. “A very tough situation.”
The fall occurred around 6:30 p.m. Nearby visitors attempted CPR until emergency responders arrived. Sadly, the hiker was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by KPTV. His identity remains undisclosed by authorities.
The Marion County Medical Examiner released the body to Marion County Search and Rescue personnel, who facilitated the recovery from the base of the falls. Unger Funeral Chapel later took custody of the remains.
Silver Falls State Park, located over an hour south of Portland, is famous for its Trail of Ten Falls. This trail features ten waterfalls and attracts numerous visitors. South Falls, in particular, is a highlight and allows guests to walk behind the cascading water.
