Historic Launch of Women’s Professional Baseball League

On August 2, 2026, Springfield, Illinois marked the milestone debut of the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) at Robin Roberts Stadium. Sarah Hodel, an athletic trainer from Duluth, Minnesota, and Rachel Koehler from St. Paul, Minnesota, were among the early arrivals, keen to witness the historic event. Hodel, a lifelong advocate for women in baseball, was thrilled to attend.

Set against the backdrop of rain, the season opened with the Los Angeles Queens rallying to a 10-8 victory against the New York Heights. Key players like Mo’ne Davis and Denae Benites showcased their skills. Notably, Maggie Foxx achieved the first hit for the league with a two-run single, and Benites hit the league’s first home run, energizing the crowd.

This league represents a significant opportunity for young female athletes. “Growing up, I played softball,” said Koehler. “But now, girls have a pathway to play baseball professionally.” The support for this new league was evident, with over 4,000 fans, including those queuing for merchandise and Mo’ne Davis bobbleheads.

The WPBL celebrated its history with a ceremony honoring women’s baseball past, present, and future. The largest applause honored 99-year-old Maybelle Blair, a former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) player, who threw the ceremonial first pitch. Blair has been an inspiration, maintaining her involvement with the league’s advisory board.

Fans like Antonietta Mabry, attending with her family, appreciated the chance to show her daughter Rosalee examples of female athletic role models, such as Amanda Gianelloni. “It’s rare to have exposure to female professional athletes,” Mabry said, highlighting the importance of role models for young girls.

Other attendees included Lindsey Keirsey, whose passion for the AAGPBL and the film “A League of Their Own” fueled her long-standing interest in women’s baseball. The event was attended by families like the Keirseys who are regular baseball enthusiasts. “It’s not just a sport,” said Hadley Keirsey, “It’s a movement that can empower women to succeed in many areas.”
