1 week ago 0

Three men face homicide charges after a fatal rope-jumping incident in Limeira, Brazil. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, fell over 130 feet from a bridge without adequate safety gear.

Authorities identified the suspects as Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42. They were arrested on Sunday and charged with homicide with eventual intent. This charge in Brazil indicates that the accused engaged in a risky act that led to a fatality, even without the intention to kill. The arrests occurred while the men attempted to flee, according to police in Limeira.

Police investigator Andrea Levy reported that the men, acting as jumping instructors, admitted Eduarda wasn’t secured to safety ropes. They failed to recall who was responsible for her equipment check, according to The Associated Press. Their attorney shared that his clients were in shock.

Online videos reveal Eduarda moments before her death, being lifted and thrown over the side of the bridge. Although she appears to wear a helmet, no safety cord is visible. The Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge), previously a railway bridge, is located in São Paulo.

Rope jumping differs from bungee jumping by utilizing climbing ropes, creating a pendulum motion instead of a bounce. The activity’s inventor, Dan Osman, died in 1998 when his ropes failed during a jump in Yosemite.

Following Eduarda’s death, tributes poured in from her community. Panobianco Academia, a local gym, shared a heartfelt post expressing their sorrow. The gym closed on Sunday in her memory.

Your presence illuminated the environments and your memory will remain forever in our hearts.

Eduarda’s mother also expressed her grief through social media, thanking her daughter for the joy and love she brought into her life.

City officials in Limeira announced intentions to sue the federal government, criticizing their inaction regarding safety measures around Skeleton Bridge. Mayor Murilo Félix highlighted ongoing efforts to address these concerns locally.

The governor’s office noted that Eduarda’s safety equipment was not properly secured. Onlookers observed her with a camera, and earlier that day, she jokingly questioned who would allow her to jump off the bridge, as reported by local media.
