Impact of College Football Transfers and Key Players to Watch

This season, a number of top college football transfers have decided to join their former coaches at new schools. Eric Morris, who previously coached at North Texas, has now moved to Oklahoma State. He brought along 21 of his former Mean Green players, including 18 from last season. Among them is Drew Mestemaker, who led FBS with 4,379 passing yards last year. Mestemaker admitted, ‘I knew Coach Morris was going to be a huge factor. Wherever he went, I was probably going to follow.’

Mestemaker’s case isn’t isolated. John Henry Daley, who notched 11½ sacks for Utah, followed coach Kyle Whittingham to Michigan. New Penn State coach Matt Campbell has also attracted about two dozen former Iowa State players, including quarterback Rocco Becht. Becht, who threw for 9,274 yards and 64 touchdowns at Iowa State, stated, ‘My main decision was to play for Matt Campbell in my final year. I didn’t want to ruin the relationships with guys I already knew.’

The trend of players joining familiar coaches is gaining traction. Indiana’s significant turnaround offers evidence of the strategy’s success. Curt Cignetti brought 13 players from James Madison to Indiana, helping the Hoosiers achieve a College Football Playoff berth in 2024 and eventually win the national title. These transfers value familiarity and the coaching style they know. ‘You know what you get with Coach Whittingham,’ Daley remarked, highlighting discipline and a winning attitude as key qualities.

Key Transfers to Watch This Season

Several other transfers are poised to have a major impact:

• Texas WR Cam Coleman (Auburn): Ranked as a top-three prospect, Coleman caught 93 passes for 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns at Auburn. Now, paired with quarterback Arch Manning, expectations are high.
• Indiana QB Josh Hoover (TCU): Taking over after Fernando Mendoza, Hoover boasts 9,629-yard and 71-touchdown statistics from TCU. He will lead a noteworthy Indiana transfer class.
• LSU QB Sam Leavitt (Arizona State): Despite an injury-shortened last season, Leavitt is a productive quarterback. He joins LSU with a strong offensive line and solid stats, including 36 touchdowns.
• Miami QB Darian Mensah (Duke): After leading Duke to an ACC title, Mensah joins Miami. With experience from Tulane, his career completion rate stands at 66.5%, demonstrating consistent performance.
• Oregon S Koi Perich (Minnesota): A versatile defender, Perich notched 82 tackles and has the ability to contribute on offense and special teams. He showcased his talent with multiple interceptions and return yards.
• BYU LB Cade Uluave (California): Uluave, a defensive force from Cal, with 100 tackles last season. His career stats include 21½ tackles for a loss and six sacks, indicating a strong presence on the field.
