On June 9, 2026, Indonesian officials captured two Russian nationals involved in a drug smuggling operation in Bali. The arrests followed a dramatic high-speed chase that resulted in several pedestrians being injured. According to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), the pair attempted to smuggle nearly eight kilograms (18 pounds) of hashish from Thailand.
The suspects, identified as a 52-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, were caught at different locations. The woman, referred to by her initials “KK,” entered Indonesia via Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport and traveled to Bali by a rental car. She planned to meet the man, identified as “SK,” at a seaport on the island. After picking up the woman, the man attempted to flee.
“We have seized the evidence, 7.8 kilograms of hashish,” stated BNN chief Suyudi Ario Seto.
Authorities reported that the man drove recklessly, hitting several locals before he was apprehended. Both individuals were detained on Friday, with images of the suspects and the suitcase containing the drugs released by BNN.
An investigation is ongoing to determine if these arrests relate to a larger smuggling ring. Indonesia is known for stringent anti-drug laws, including the death penalty for drug traffickers. Although executions have been on hold for several years, many traffickers remain on death row. The last execution in Indonesia occurred in 2016, involving one Indonesian and three Nigerian offenders.
In related incidents, Indonesia has taken decisive actions against drug traffickers recently. For example, in December 2024, Mary Jane Veloso was removed from death row and sent back to the Philippines. Additionally, members of the “Bali Nine” were repatriated to Australia after serving extensive prison terms. More recently, two British individuals received nine and eleven-year sentences in March for smuggling cocaine into Bali. A Peruvian woman was also detained last August for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine using unconventional methods.
