Iran Halts U.S. Talks in Response to Israeli Actions in Lebanon

3 weeks ago 0

The Iranian government announced on Monday that it is suspending discussions with the United States. This decision serves as a protest against Israel’s ongoing military activities in Lebanon, as reported by media outlets close to the government.

The semiofficial Tasnim news agency conveyed that the Iranian delegation decided to halt ‘talks and the exchange of texts through mediators’ due to what they describe as the ‘continuation of the Zionist regime’s actions in Lebanon.’ These actions, according to Iran, breach one of the key conditions of the ceasefire. This ceasefire has reportedly been violated across all fronts.

Over the weekend and into Monday, the U.S. military and Iran engaged in a series of strikes against each other. This violence erupts despite an initial ceasefire agreement reached in early April. Tasnim news agency also mentioned that Iran is considering closing the Strait of Hormuz entirely. This strait is a vital channel for global oil supply, carrying an estimated fifth of the world’s oil before the conflict.

While there have been no official statements from the Iranian government, communications often occur through media channels. U.S. authorities have not yet provided a response to requests for comments.

The conflict originated on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel embarked on military operations that have resulted in the deaths of thousands, primarily affecting Iran and Lebanon. This conflict has also claimed the lives of 13 U.S. military personnel. The Iranian response, which effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, has led to a surge in global energy prices.

Ongoing negotiations over a comprehensive agreement have stalled due to unresolved debates on several matters, notably concerning the trajectory of Iran’s nuclear and missile initiatives.
