Israeli Concerns About American Political Shift and Middle Eastern Alliances

Ofir Akunis, the Israeli Consul General in New York, expressed concerns, not about the ongoing war with Iran or other Middle Eastern conflicts, but about changes in American politics. He suggested these shifts could threaten the historic alliance between the United States and Israel.

Citing recent elections where progressive Democratic Party candidates criticized Israel and US interventions abroad, Akunis remarked that some individuals seem to favor adversaries over the American administration. Akunis emphasized the importance of supporting allies over merely opposing political figures.

The Israeli diplomat expressed hope for continued US support but acknowledged the need for Israel to become more self-reliant given current trends. He pointed to Israel’s successful defense systems like the Iron Dome, which have effectively countered various attacks since the October 2023 crisis initiated by the Palestinian Hamas movement.

Akunis clarified that enhanced independence does not exclude partnerships. He affirmed that Israel would continue to build coalitions globally, maintaining strong ties with the United States. In recent years, Israel has developed alliances with India, Greece, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco.

Despite these expanding relationships, Akunis remains wary of potential threats from Iran and its allies, as well as a new alliance among Sunni Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan. This coalition raises concerns, particularly with Turkey’s inclusion, given its hostile stance toward Israel under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Akunis underlined the ongoing challenge posed by Iran, emphasizing patience in dealing with a regime that has persisted for nearly five decades. He expressed confidence in former President Donald Trump’s approach to Iran but advised firmness in negotiations.

Akunis criticized Western voices that focus their outrage on Israel instead of Iran. He argued that areas like Gaza and Lebanon could prosper without groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. He outlined plans for regional connectivity, including a direct line between Beirut and Cairo, envisioning potential prosperity akin to other Middle Eastern success stories.

Without significant change, Akunis warned of a difficult future for the Western world, emphasizing the need to reject support for terrorist organizations over constructive values and self-interest.
