Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy Balances Family Tragedy and Coaching Duties

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy faces a family crisis after his son, Elijah, allegedly shot his wife, Mia, multiple times on July 26. Mia remains hospitalized. Despite this, Chiefs GM Brett Veach stated that Bieniemy continues to be involved with the team, while his family remains his main focus.

Veach explained that the team arranged for Bieniemy to have a live feed of practices. This allows him to watch and analyze the training remotely. According to The Athletic, Bieniemy called to speak with head coach Andy Reid regarding rookie running back Emmett Johnson, emphasizing his commitment to detail and ensuring every player understands their role.

Elijah Bieniemy, Eric’s son, has been granted a mental health competency evaluation before his preliminary court hearing. He faces charges for shooting his mother, including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in a felony, as per the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Veach noted that Bieniemy’s return to the team brought a renewed focus on discipline and precision. Last season, the Chiefs ended with a 6-11 record, and the organization hopes Bieniemy can steer them back to their previous success, which includes winning two Super Bowls with him as a key figure.

Brett Veach described Bieniemy as an embodiment of focus, relating it to the coaching standards expected by Andy Reid. However, Bieniemy’s in-person presence is uncertain due to Mia’s critical condition, although she has been moved out of ICU.

A report indicated that a person believed to be Elijah called the police two days before the incident, expressing concerns over his inability to access weapons. He claimed his parents were withholding his weapons, which led to his feeling defenseless despite being a certified UFC fighter.

Elijah awaits a mental health evaluation to determine his ability to aid in his defense. The court records suggest significant mental health issues. Meanwhile, Eric Bieniemy, age 56, remains engaged with the Chiefs and manages his responsibilities from afar.
