Lifeguards Rescue Unconscious Child from Ocean in Florida

Another remarkable rescue took place this summer as strong ocean conditions challenge holidaymakers. Two lifeguards at Silver Beach, Volusia County, Florida, were credited with saving a young boy on July 30.

Lifeguard Dempsey Manhart was about to start his lunch break when a child’s family urgently sought his help, according to FOX 35 Orlando. The child was unconscious in the arms of a family member.

Lifeguard Mackenzie Malone joined Manhart, checked the young boy’s pulse, and they promptly began CPR. This marked Malone’s first rescue of a drowning child during her four years of lifeguarding.

She emphasized readiness, saying, “We’re always expecting anything. We make sure we know what to do regardless of the scenario.” This preparedness was crucial when the child was found unconscious with a head injury.

Thanks to their efforts, the boy began breathing independently. Malone expressed gratitude, remarking how her training came through during the rescue. “I’m grateful that everything worked out and that the boy has a chance to be with his family,” she noted.

The lifeguards hope this event reminds beachgoers to swim near staffed lifeguard towers, where trained responders can quickly assist in emergencies. A Facebook user praised their bravery while others highlighted the importance of lifeguards.

Volusia County is located about 50 miles from Orlando in east-central Florida. Just before this event, 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams in Santa Cruz, California, rescued a 10-year-old boy amidst pounding waves.

Los Angeles County lifeguards executed around 2,000 rescues one weekend this summer as challenging surf impacted Southern California beaches. Visitors are advised to consult lifeguards about ocean conditions before swimming.

Swimmers caught in rip currents are advised to stay calm and swim parallel to the shore, aiming to break free from the current before heading back. If escape is not possible, they should float, tread water, and signal for help, per the National Weather Service.
