Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, is advocating for a ban on individuals born outside the United States from serving in Congress and the federal judiciary. During an appearance on “Saturday in America,” Mace explained her proposed amendment to the Constitution and criticized lawmakers like Rep. Ilhan Omar.
Mace emphasized, “If the president must be natural-born, then so should members of Congress and our judges.” Her resolution aims to require House and Senate members, the federal judiciary, and other Senate-confirmed appointees to be natural-born citizens.
“We don’t have to look any further than Ilhan Omar or Shri Thanedar,”said Mace, referring to Rep. Omar and Rep. Thanedar. “They have shown loyalty to foreign countries.”
This proposal targets individuals Mace accuses of divided loyalties, proposing retroactive removal of naturalized citizens from Congress. She mentioned Omar, Thanedar, and Jayapal as examples, stating, “Their loyalty is not to America.”
Ilhan Omar dismissed the proposed amendment, responding casually with “Good luck to her.” Pramila Jayapal criticized Mace’s proposal as “xenophobic” and “narrow-minded,” urging lawmakers to focus on other pressing issues.
To be enacted, Mace’s amendment requires two-thirds approval in Congress and ratification by three-fourths of U.S. states. Although constitutional amendments can also begin through a convention requested by two-thirds of state legislatures, this method remains unused successfully.
Fox News Digital sought comments from Omar’s office but did not receive an immediate response.
