Mauricio Pochettino Extends Tenure as U.S. Men’s Soccer Coach

The U.S. Soccer Federation has announced a contract extension for Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the U.S. men’s national soccer team, until the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This agreement secures Pochettino’s role in leading the team’s future development.

Pochettino took over as coach in 2024 following shortcomings in a critical tournament prior to the summer World Cup. Under his leadership, the team showed significant improvement, achieving notable victories over Paraguay, Australia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Although the U.S. team exited in the Round of 16 after a defeat to Belgium, their success in the tournament was historic, earning the most wins ever by the U.S. men’s squad in a World Cup.

The popularity of the team soared as millions of viewers tuned in to watch the matches. An average of 50.1 million viewers saw the Round of 16 match, making it the most-watched soccer game in U.S. television history, with broadcasts on Fox and Telemundo capturing significant attention.

JT Batson, CEO of U.S. Soccer, expressed enthusiasm about Pochettino’s continued guidance, highlighting his and his staff’s belief in the evolving soccer landscape in the United States. Pochettino echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the vast potential within the U.S. soccer program and expressing a strong commitment to enhancing the team’s capabilities and opportunities.

Pochettino’s extensive coaching experience includes managing top European clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. His background brings a wealth of knowledge to U.S. Soccer.

Looking ahead, the U.S. men’s team is set to participate in major international competitions, such as the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup. Pochettino’s expanded role will involve advising on broader national team pathways, including youth soccer development, coaching education, and collaboration with professional leagues.
