4 days ago 0

The Netherlands secured a 5-1 victory over Sweden in a World Cup match on Saturday, thanks to two goals each from Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo. This win helps the Netherlands rebound after a draw in their opening match and places them at the top of Group F.

Brobbey’s early goals set the tone for the match. He scored in the fifth minute following a cross from Gakpo, striking the ball with his right foot. His second goal came in the 17th minute when he converted another cross from Denzel Dumfries.

Gakpo, who also provided an assist, scored in the 47th and 54th minutes. His first goal came just after halftime with a shot off a cross by Dumfries. Gakpo’s second goal matched Brobbey’s contributions and extended the lead further.

Sweden, who previously defeated Tunisia 5-1, struggled against the Dutch. They managed a goal in the 59th minute through Anthony Elanga, avoiding a shutout. Despite several scoring opportunities, they were thwarted by Netherlands’ goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who made four crucial first-half saves.

Before Elanga’s goal, Gustaf Lagerbielke’s header was disallowed for offside. Lagerbielke, a member of Swedish nobility, was joined in importance at the match by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, who supported their team from a luxury suite.

The game attracted a crowd of 68,777, predominantly Netherlands supporters, many participating in the Oranje Fanwalk from Rice University to the stadium. Crysencio Summerville, who assisted Gakpo’s second goal, added a late goal in the 89th minute and celebrated with a gesture inspired by NBA star Steph Curry.

The Netherlands will face Tunisia next in Kansas City. Meanwhile, Sweden concludes its group matches against Japan in Dallas.
