NTSB Preliminary Report on United Airlines Incident in New Jersey

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary findings concerning an unusual incident involving a United Airlines plane and a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike. The event took place on May 3 during the aircraft’s final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport.

Incident Overview

According to the NTSB report, United Airlines flight 169 struck a light pole while making its approach to runway 29 at 1:50 p.m. Debris from the damaged light pole impacted a tractor-trailer that was traveling southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike. Initial beliefs suggested that the plane’s landing gear had made contact with the Baltimore-based truck, leading to the confusion about the nature of contact.

“Debris from the light pole subsequently impacted a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on the New Jersey turnpike,” the NTSB wrote in the report.

Dashcam video from the tractor-trailer captured the moment of impact. The report noted that there were no tire marks on either the tractor or its cab.

Flight Approach Details

Flight 169 experienced three runway changes as it approached its landing. The captain remained unconcerned about the changes. However, the first officer cautioned about slow airspeed during the final approach. At 500 feet, he reiterated the concern, indicating that they were slow and somewhat low.

The captain acknowledged feeling slow but believed they were aligned for landing. He reported hearing a thump as they prepared to land, while the first officer noted a mild jolt. Other crew members confirmed hearing a loud bang just before touchdown.

Damage Examination

After parking the plane, the captain inspected the aircraft’s exterior. Investigators discovered three punctures in the lower left aft fuselage. One gash measured nearly four feet long and four inches wide. There were also a couple of smaller punctures, along with dents and creases. The NTSB described the damage as “substantial.”
