Officer-Involved Shooting Sparks Protests in Madison

A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, fatally shot a man who attacked him with a knife during an arrest attempt. The incident occurred on Wednesday and has sparked large gatherings of protesters marching towards the state Capitol.

Cellphone footage of the event, capturing the sound of three gunshots, has been widely shared on social media. The video depicts multiple vehicles halted at an intersection with people observing the scene.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson, in a news conference, revealed the deceased was a man in his 30s, withholding his name. Protesters, however, identified him as Corey Ruiz, and social media clips show them chanting his name. The Wisconsin Examiner and Wisconsin Right Now also identified the man as Ruiz, citing their sources.

Details of the Madison Shooting

Chief Patterson stated police responded just before 1 p.m. after receiving a call about someone attempting to break into parked cars in the area. “Officers located the individual, who fled on a bicycle, traveling through nearby backyards,” Patterson explained.

Officers located him again by 1:30 p.m. at Baldwin and Williamson streets. Patterson said the man either fell from his bike or was taken down by officers. A physical confrontation ensued at the intersection, during which the man brandished a knife, injuring an officer.

According to Patterson, a Taser was deployed but failed to subdue the suspect. The injured officer then fired his weapon. The wounded man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The police department released an image of the knife involved in the incident.

Patterson described the officer as experienced but provided little further information about him or the deceased. Black advocacy groups in Madison asserted that the man was Black.

Brandi Grayson, leader of Urban Triage, an advocacy group for the Black community in Madison, stated, “Today, Madison police shot a Black man three times while he was having a mental health crisis. The video shows him lifeless in the street, with officers handcuffing and piling onto him.”

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct an independent probe due to police involvement. As per the department’s rules, the four responding officers will be on administrative leave.
