Oregon Ducks’ 2026 Season Faces Unexpected Challenges

3 days ago 0

As the 2026 college football season approached, expectations were high for the Oregon Ducks. Led by head coach Dan Lanning, the team’s strong recruiting and consistent performance in the Big Ten had set them up as contenders for their first National Championship. Starting quarterback Dante Moore’s return further bolstered their prospects.

However, the season quickly unraveled. An unconvincing win over Boise State raised concerns, followed by a heavy defeat to Oklahoma State. Despite these setbacks, Oregon had a chance to recover when they faced and defeated USC, although Moore was injured in the process. Backup quarterback Dylan Raiola filled in admirably, and Oregon won 41-27.

After the USC victory, Lanning made bold claims about recruiting players interested in winning, which soon backfired. Oregon’s performance against UCLA resulted in seven turnovers and a 17-15 loss, contradicting Lanning’s statements on the field. This defeat was a prelude to further disappointments, such as a loss to Illinois, where the Ducks, despite being favorites, managed just a single touchdown early on.

The Ducks’ struggles have cast a shadow on Lanning’s tenure. The team has faced challenges with a backup quarterback and issues among the wide receivers. Yet, these don’t fully explain the team’s significant decline, as reflected by their absence from the latest AP Poll. With difficult games against Northwestern, Ohio State, Michigan, and Washington on the horizon, more losses seem likely.

Despite the turmoil, Lanning has a history of success, including multiple College Football Playoff appearances and a 2025 Orange Bowl victory. However, the Ducks have high expectations, fueled by substantial investments in recruiting. They expected to compete for championships, a goal now seemingly distant.

Looking beyond 2026, Oregon faces questions about Raiola’s potential and the defense’s regression from its previous strength. Off-field issues have also marred the season. While a coaching change seems improbable in the immediate future, Lanning’s once-strong position is now precarious, highlighting the rapid shifts typical of modern college football.
