Political Newcomer N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas Triumphs in Oklahoma Runoff

N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, a nurse with no prior political experience, emerged victorious in the Democratic Senate runoff in Oklahoma. She defeated Jim Priest, a lawyer and nonprofit executive, marking a significant achievement considering the state’s long-standing preference for Republican candidates.

In the June primary, Thomas led with the highest percentage of votes among five candidates competing for the nomination. Her victory sets the stage for a historic challenge in Oklahoma, known for not electing a Democrat to the Senate for over thirty years.

Thomas has outlined an ambitious agenda on her campaign website. Key proposals include increasing teacher salaries, restoring Roe v. Wade, and expanding Obamacare. Alongside these objectives, she aims to impeach President Donald Trump early in her Senate term.

In an interview with NPR affiliate KOSU, Thomas discussed her stance on the Republican nominee, Rep. Kevin Hern, and his support for Trump. She emphasized, “I will work diligently to ensure impeachment, removal, and conviction within my first 100 days.”

Facing Hern in the November elections poses a considerable challenge, given Trump’s landslide victory in Oklahoma by nearly 35 points in 2024. Despite Thomas’s impressive performance in previous rounds, Hern represents a formidable opponent.

Hern has amassed a campaign fund of approximately $10 million during this cycle, whereas Thomas has raised around $60,000. Hern also enjoys Trump’s endorsement and pushes for the SAVE America Act, aligning with the America First agenda.

Hern remarked, “Socialist Democrats like N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas are disconnected from Oklahoman values.” He added, “President Trump and Republicans aim to deliver results, while Thomas focuses on partisan politics against a president strongly supported by Oklahomans.”
