Since Donald Trump’s re-election, Prince Harry has shifted from praising America to critiquing Trump’s administration. His focus now includes rebuilding bonds with Britain.
Harry’s Move to America
In April 2024, Newsweek reported that the Duke of Sussex had officially changed his residence from Britain to America. Earlier, he considered U.S. citizenship, but by 2025, he confirmed he had no plans to become an American citizen. One of his few comments on his new home included criticism of Trump’s foreign policy, particularly concerning America’s role in supporting Ukraine against Russia.
Why It Matters
Initially, Harry viewed America as a refuge after leaving the monarchy for California in March 2020. However, his recent attitudes appear to have changed. Some commentators argue Harry might return to Britain, citing his statement that America is “currently” his home.
Harry’s Previous Praise for America
Before Trump’s return to power, Harry’s remarks about the U.S. were positive. He expressed appreciation for his welcoming community in Santa Barbara and enjoyed his life in America, as shared in various interviews.
In his book Spare, published in January 2023, Harry highlighted his early positive experiences in the U.S., noting the directness and honesty of Americans. Despite some past criticisms of Trump, such as urging Americans to reject hate speech during the 2020 election, he generally spoke fondly of his life in the U.S.
Harry’s Criticism Post-Trump’s Re-election
Since Trump’s 2024 victory, Harry’s tone shifted. At the Kyiv Security Forum in 2026, he emphasized America’s responsibility to back Ukraine, referencing prior promises related to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in December 2025, Harry joked about America’s obsession with royalty, indirectly referencing Trump’s presidency. Harry has engaged more with American politics through critique or satire, marking a departure from his previous positive messaging about the U.S.
Harry’s Renewed Affection for Britain
Recently, Harry’s comments about Britain have been increasingly positive compared to his memoir, which described Britain as emotionally reserved. In a November 2025 essay on British identity, he expressed pride in serving Britain, indicating a lasting connection to the country.
His use of “currently” in the essay sparked speculation about a potential move back to Britain. However, safety concerns for his family remain a significant barrier, as he seeks the reinstatement of his Metropolitan Police team. Harry plans to return to Britain this summer to promote the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. His recent comments suggest America has shifted from a symbol of opportunity to a subject of scrutiny, while Britain retains a core emotional significance in his public discourse.
