Renowned Photojournalist Sal Veder Passes Away at 99

Photojournalist Sal Veder, celebrated for his iconic Pulitzer-Prize winning photo Burst of Joy, has died at the age of 99. His family confirmed he passed away in his sleep at his residence in El Dorado County, California. He was only days away from his 100th birthday.

Burst of Joy: A Moment Captured in History

Veder captured the emotional moment in 1973 when Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm, a prisoner of war, reunited with his family at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. This photograph became a symbol of the end of the Vietnam War.

“This family came out of nowhere, got out of their car and dashed for the soldier, who’d been a POW for five years,” Veder recalled. He noticed the emotions etched on their faces from a distance and captured the reunion.

Unbeknownst to Veder at the time, Stirm had received a letter from his wife seeking a divorce shortly before his release.

Veder worked with the Associated Press from 1961 to 1993, documenting significant political events and figures. Photographs from his career include:
