Senate Republicans narrowly halted a second attempt to restrict President Donald Trump’s war authority in Iran as a prospective peace deal emerges. Sen. Raphael Warnock’s latest war-powers resolution failed, despite a memorandum of understanding signed by Trump and Iran, suggesting an end to hostilities. Congress remains uninformed about the deal’s specifics.
Sen. Tim Kaine, advocating for Democrats’ war powers efforts, acknowledged the potential for a peace agreement but described it as an “intermission” in the conflict. Kaine stressed the importance of Congressional consultation, mandated by the Constitution, before any further military engagement.
Despite a previous effort gaining traction in the Senate, Warnock’s resolution did not succeed. Some absences were crucial, allowing Republicans to grant Trump more time for peace deal negotiations. Notable Republicans, including Sens. Susan Collins, Bill Cassidy, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul, joined Democrats in supporting the resolution.
Senate Foreign Relations Chair James Risch argued Democrats’ efforts seemingly assisted Iran and contended that passing the resolution would cause Iran to withdraw from any potential peace agreement.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated he had not received details on the deal and questioned the normalcy of requesting such briefings. He anticipated details would be shared with Congress soon.
On the Democratic side, Sen. Chris Murphy expressed concern that the initial reports of the deal favored Iran over the U.S., characterizing the situation as surrender. However, Murphy advocated for ending the war to prevent further loss of life and financial waste.
