Severe Storm Hits Midwest, Causing Power Outages and Disruption

Severe weather caused power outages for nearly 1 million customers in the Midwest as intense thunderstorms and strong winds swept across the region. Tornado warnings were issued, and dark clouds covered the skies. Authorities halted all flights at Chicago’s major airports, leading to delays while clearing the backlog. According to FlightAware, 45% of flights at Chicago O’Hare Airport faced delays and 10% were canceled.

Ohio experienced widespread power outages, affecting the state capital. At least one fatality was reported. Photos shared online from the Chicago area depicted flooded streets, trees entangled with power lines, and homes with significant damage.

By Tuesday evening, over 991,000 people were without electricity across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, as per PowerOutage.us. Scott Baker from the National Weather Service explained that the Midwest was influenced by a ‘ring of fire,’ characterized by excessive moisture and storms at its perimeter.

The weather service issued a stark warning about the potential danger of these storms. CBS News Chicago meteorologists noted that a couple of suspected tornadoes struck several south Chicago suburbs and northwest Indiana.

In Flossmoor, south Chicago, fallen power lines and trees were common sights. Resident Gilbert Casillas described the severe weather experience, stating, “The wind was intense, and debris hit every side of the house simultaneously. Visibility was minimal, leading us to seek refuge in the basement.”

Javid Jenkins from Homewood reported the challenges faced, “We lost power, which was terrifying. Our community usually handles snow and cold well, but this storm exceeded expectations.”

Wind speeds reached 80 mph at several personal weather stations. In Tinley Park, Kerry Hourigan observed, “Our roof was completely destroyed. Although trivial, I am unsure of the whereabouts of my new barbecue grill after the storm.”

In Portage, Indiana, a tragic incident occurred when a home explosion claimed a life. While unclear if weather-related, officials described a vast debris field at the site of the engulfed house. Crown Point, Indiana, saw significant tree damage, with residents assessing the aftermath. Hailey Mogan recounted, “We barricaded ourselves in a bathroom, holding the door shut against strong winds. Access to roads poses a challenge with several closures in place.”

The frequent storms led to the cancellation of the Lake County, Indiana Fair’s fifth day, disrupting planned activities. LaPorte County faced considerable tree damage according to Commissioner Joe Haney.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine reported a casualty in Roseville due to delayed emergency response amidst flooded roads. He cautioned ongoing flood risks as rain forecasts continued through Friday. Columbus, Ohio, preemptively sent government employees home ahead of expected storms and a library in Westerville shut due to indoor flooding.
