Minneapolis police are actively managing a shooting situation near 15 East Grant Street, where several individuals have been injured, including two police officers. The city has issued an alert asking the public to avoid the area due to the ongoing situation. A source informed WCCO that a suspect is down, which is supported by scanner audio. A high-ranking official assured WCCO that the injured officers are expected to recover.
The scene at the intersection of Nicollet and Grant has witnessed a significant law enforcement response. Officers and vehicles from nearby areas, including St. Louis Park, Edina, the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State Patrol, transit police, and sheriff’s deputies, have arrived to assist. St. Paul’s ATF field division also reported their special agents are responding.
Residents are advised to stay clear of the vicinity from 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and Hennepin Avenue to Third Avenue South. The Minneapolis Police Department is handling the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stated, “My public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. State officials are on the ground to support local law enforcement, and we will share more information as it becomes available.” FBI Director Kash Patel offered “any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.”
The response is concentrated on an apartment complex on Grant Street. Officers with long guns were seen monitoring the building for a considerable time. Two heavily armored SWAT vehicles were stationed at the intersection, with ambulances lining the area towards downtown. Several stretchers were brought out, with some individuals appearing to have leg injuries. However, the condition of others is not immediately clear.
Reports from the scene indicate that activity was noted around the eighth floor of the complex, where individuals believed to be residents remained in their units as police assessed the situation.
“I heard the gunshots as I was driving down La Salle Avenue,” said Abdiwakil Mohamed from south Minneapolis. “I heard three shots from a rifle and saw a police officer shot in their car. The officer then hit the gas and collided with another vehicle.”
Mohamed observed the shooter firing from a high position in a nearby building, targeting individuals on the ground. He saw an officer remove their bulletproof vest to check for chest injuries. “Police were everywhere, they came from every single side,” he remarked.
