Shooting Near White House Raises Security Concerns

1 month ago 0

President Donald Trump stated that the gunman, shot dead after opening fire near a White House security checkpoint, had a “possible obsession” with the presidential residence. The Secret Service reported that the incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Although no agents were injured, one bystander was shot when the suspect drew a weapon from his bag and began shooting. CBS News indicated that 15 to 30 gunshots were fired in total.

The suspect, Nasire Best, had been previously known to law enforcement and the Secret Service. He had approached the White House multiple times. Trump commended the Secret Service and law enforcement for their swift response, highlighting the suspect’s violent history and possible obsession with the White House.

Security Response and Actions

Trump expressed gratitude on Truth Social for the professional action against a gunman near the White House. The incident highlighted ongoing security threats and raised concerns about safety at the heavily guarded site. This shooting coincided with a busy day at the White House, with Trump and senior officials present amid talks regarding a potential Iran agreement.

President Trump emphasized the importance of completing his renovations at the White House complex to ensure future safety. His statement came in light of a recent incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump stressed the necessity of creating a highly secure space in Washington, D.C., viewing it as a national security priority.

Chronology of the Shooting

Journalists at the White House heard gunshots and were moved to the press briefing room for shelter. The event took place near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the presidential complex.

The Secret Service reported that the suspect approached a checkpoint, pulled out a weapon, and began firing at officers. Agents returned fire, hitting and later causing the suspect’s death. It remains unclear if the bystander was struck by the suspect’s or officers’ gunfire. The Secret Service confirmed no injuries among its personnel.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated that agents were aiding the investigation and updates would follow. Evidence was visible at the scene, marked by police tape and evidence markers. Video shared by ABC News correspondent Selina Wang captured the chaos as gunfire broke out.

Details About Nasire Best

The gunman was identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best from Maryland. He had been detained near the White House previously on June 26, 2025, for threatening officers. Court records reveal his arrest in July 2025 for attempting unauthorized access to a security checkpoint and not complying with commands. He claimed to be Jesus Christ and wanted arrest.

After an initial hearing and issuance of a pretrial stay-away order, he failed to appear for another hearing, leading to a bench warrant. Best was then committed to a psychiatric unit for mental health concerns.

Increased Security Incidents

The shooting adds to a series of security scares near the White House, including a gunman ambushing National Guard members in November, with tragic outcomes. It also builds on events like a foiled assassination attempt during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and other recent incidents involving law enforcement confrontations.

Debate continues over funding and improvements for Trump’s proposed ballroom at the White House, amplified by recent security threats. While Trump claims the ballroom will be privately funded, Republicans seek around $1 billion in federal funds for Secret Service facility upgrades. Critics question shifting costs to taxpayers, while supporters highlight the need for enhanced protections during large events.
